Tiger Woods’s U.S. Open Victory

Let’s face it, the only thing more boring than actually playing golf is watching it (with the possible exception of the NBA Draft). However, when Tiger Woods comes into picture everything changes. Maybe it’s just the thought of one golfer knocking the socks off everyone else is enough to get people to watch. Well, last week, a man named Rocco Mediate decided that he was going to get good. Tiger had been facing a strained knee or whatever for the month before this U.S. Open and nobody expected him to do as well as usual. However, on the last hole of the 4th round, Tiger made a birdie putt to tie Mediate for the lead. This forced an 18 hole playoff that also ended in Tiger knocking a birdie putt to tie it up. He then beat Rocco in a sudden-death playoff and won the U.S. Open in 91 holes. I was actually watching this, believe it or not. I was very impressed and it was one of the best moments of the year in sports for me. Well, now the fact comes out that Tiger had a broken leg throughout this! This is possibly the greatest moment in individual sports history when you weigh in all the circumstances. I feel a bit sorry for Rocco Mediate who will never again get this chance to be on top of the world, and within a few weeks, no one will even remember him. It was kind of a bonehead move by Tiger to do this and now he’s out for the rest of the year. It’s also bad for golf because now no one will want to watch this boring sport. The consequences of this are bad, but I don’t grade consequences.

Overall Grade: A+
